A 'topping out' ceremony at BAA Stansted Airport marked the latest phase of development at the airport's £40 million terminal extension.
The extension will add a further 5,900m2 of floor space in the international arrivals area and is due to open before the end of June with project completion expected by December 2008. With a key theme of 'investing to improve passenger service and sustainability,' the ceremony marked the completion of the main structure, roof diagrid and facade glazing stages of the construction.
Managing Director of BAA Stansted, Stewart Wingate stated: "Our exciting plans will transform the terminal building and improve even further the levels of customer service we provide to the tens of thousands of passengers who pass through Stansted every day." Mr Wingate went on further to point out that the airport has "invested in the latest technology to improve the environmental performance of the terminal and limit the impact of our operations."
BAA Stansted has endeavored to keep the project carbon neutral and its success in the area was recognised by DEFRA who awarded the Stansted Arrivals Project with a grant of around £250,000 as part of DEFRA's Bio-energey capital Grants Scheme.
