Airport operator BAA has unveiled a controversial planning application for a second runway at Stansted Airport.
BAA's proposal would see a new runway and terminal completed at the Essex based London hub built by 2015, doubling the size of Stansted Airport. BAA state that the expansion would create over 13,000 jobs and bring UK economic benefits of £9 billion.
Opposing the plans, the Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) campaign group state that the development would ruin 1,000 acres of countryside and ancient woodland with the loss of 13 listed buildings - though BAA have stated that 10 of these would be dismantled and rebuilt.
SEE stated that the application is "going beyond environmental vandalism and being tantamount to a declaration of war on the local community and global environment."
BAA Director for Stansted Generation 2 Alastair McDermid stated: "To help shape this vision we have listened very carefully to the views of thousands of people, and I firmly believe we have planned the best airport project of its time." Mr McDermid went on to state that BAA "have worked extremely hard to minimise the environmental impacts that were anticipated by the Government when it published its Air Transport White Paper in 2003."
